The House of Benvenuto Cellini

The history of Vicchio is often interrelated with the life of famous personalities. It is known for certain that Benvenuto Cellini lived in Vicchio. He owned a house here from 1550 until 1571 ( the year of his death ) where he occasionally lived. Historical documents and land registers provide exhaustive information and confirm that the artist owned the building. The house is located at the end of Corso del Popolo, in the complex of buildings that encircled the Florentine tower, mined and destroyed during the Second World War. The house was part of the "Castle", the urban centre built inside the fortifications, built by the Florentines in 1324, whence we infer that the house of Benvenuto Cellini dates from this period. The first document that certifies " the existence of the Cellini House at n.995, a building with a front porch and an inner courtyard " is a 1825 cadastral map. All of the subsequent documents confirm this fact. The house of the sculptor was recently restored by the Provincial Administration. The restoration work, carried out with first-rate expertise, finally restores to the citizens of Vicchio this building of great historical interest, used now as a centre for social and cultural events such as vocational jewellery courses. We get evidence of Cellini's stay in Vicchio, not only from his house, but also from a curious episode happened on the 28th of August, 1560. the artist was invited for dinner by a certain Filippo ( nicknemed " Lo Sbietta " ), the brother of the man who had sold him the house. Probably for reasons related to the sale, Filippo's wife gave him some poisoned food. Owing to it Cellini had to be cured for over a year, as he recounted it himself.
