The House of Giotto

The House of Giotto is surely one of the most interesting stops during a trip to Vicchio. Situated on the lovely hill of Vespignano, just below the church of San Martino, this old and simple medieval building has been altered more than once over the centuries. After the first extensive restoration work in 1840, others followed at the end of the century ( a memorial stone on the façade bears witness to them ), that changed its original state, by decorating it with stone panels and a Gothic-style portal. In 1919 the house suffered considerable damage as a result of the earthquake, the whole first floor collapsed. It was since then forgotten and exposed to a slow deterioration, the collapsed floor replaced by a makeshift covering. When the Municipality of Vicchio purchased the building-which had been used as a farm outbuilding since the beginning of the XX century - and first of all after the final restoration in 1977 ( entrusted to the Monuments Office ) Giotto's birthplace began a new life. It is worth pointing out that the survey carried out by the Monuments Office found that the small building was an adjoining extension of a manor house.
The House of Giotto, besides being of historical interest, offers the possibility of visiting the Museum ( on exhibition inside the house ) where reproductions on panels of most of Giotto's works are to be found. The panels illustrate the various periods of Giotto's artistic route from its beginnings ( circa 1280-1285 ), St. Francis' life in Assisi and Rome ( 1285-1302 ), the Paduan period ( 1302-1309 ), the pictorial activity carried out from his return to Florence onwards ( circa 1320 ) until his death. The documents that illustrate Giotto's life are of great interest: they bear witness to his steady passion for his birthplace. A project that proposed to enrich the exhibition by new multimedial instruments is in progress. The improvements brought to the Museum and its availability to public, together with the growing number of scholars and tourists who visit it, prove not only the indisputable greatness of Giotto, but also a growing and due attention to the work of a great artist from Mugello.
